Deck Building in Northern Indiana
Composite, pressure-treated, and lakefront decks built across Northern Indiana. Joshua Knisely, the owner, supervises every job.
Most decks fail at the footings. Indiana's frost line sits at 36 inches. When posts don't go that deep, the freeze-thaw cycle pushes them up within a couple of winters and the whole structure starts to twist. Joshua Knisely has been in the deck business across Kosciusko County for 15+ years and supervises every job from the first stake to the final inspection. That includes pulling permits, coordinating with the county building department, and handling the LARE permits that lakefront builds on Wawasee, Tippecanoe, and Webster require.
Owner Supervised
Joshua Knisely is on every job site, not managing from a phone while a crew works alone. When you call with a question about board direction or railing height, you're talking to the person running the job.
Permit-Ready Builds
We pull the permit, schedule the footing inspection, and meet the inspector on site. Lakefront jobs get the DNR LARE paperwork handled before the first hole gets dug.
Material Expertise
Composite, pressure-treated, aluminum railing, helical piers for saturated lake soil. We work with all of it weekly and can tell you honestly which makes sense for your yard, your budget, and how long you plan to stay in the house.
What We Build
We build composite decks (Trex, TimberTech, and similar capped boards), pressure-treated southern yellow pine decks, and aluminum railing systems. We also handle lakefront decks with proper DNR coordination, dock-attached platforms, and multi-level builds with stairs, skirting, and integrated lighting.
Materials
Composite or Pressure-Treated: Which Deck Material Is Right for You?
Both materials build a solid deck. The right choice comes down to your budget, how much weekend maintenance you want to do, and how long you plan to keep the deck.
Composite
Trex, TimberTech, and AZEK boards run $45-65 per square foot installed. They carry 25-50 year warranties on the boards, no sealing or staining ever, and they hold color through Indiana summers and salt-treated winters. Higher upfront cost, but you don't touch them again.
Best for: Homeowners staying 10+ years who don't want yearly upkeep.
Pressure-Treated
Southern yellow pine runs $25-40 per square foot installed. Realistic lifespan is 12-15 years with proper care, which means sealing every 2-3 years and replacing the occasional cupped board. Lowest upfront cost and the look most people grew up with.
Best for: Tighter budgets or homeowners who don't mind a weekend of staining every couple years.
Lakefront Specialty
Saturated soil near the waterline won't hold standard concrete footings. We use helical piers driven below frost depth, dock-attached platforms with proper transitions, and multi-level builds that step down toward the water. Add roughly $8,000-15,000 over a standard deck for permits and specialized footings.
Best for: Wawasee, Tippecanoe, Webster, and other Kosciusko County lake lots.
Aluminum Railing
Powder-coated aluminum railing meets Indiana IRC code (36 inches for decks under 30 inches of height, 42 inches above that, 4-inch maximum baluster spacing). Won't rust, won't rot, won't need repainting. Pairs with composite or pressure-treated decking.
Best for: Anyone who wants a clean sightline to the yard or lake without wood rail maintenance.

What Does a Deck Cost in Northern Indiana?
A pressure-treated deck in Kosciusko County runs roughly $25-40 per square foot installed. Composite decks (Trex, TimberTech, AZEK) run $45-65 per square foot installed. A standard 16x20 pressure-treated deck lands somewhere around $8,000-13,000, while the same footprint in composite typically falls between $14,000-21,000. These are 2024 Northern Indiana ballparks, not quotes.
Lakefront builds add $8,000-15,000 over a comparable land-side deck. That covers DNR LARE permitting, helical piers driven into saturated soil, and the engineering required for dock-attached platforms. That extra cost is not optional on a lake lot. It's what keeps the deck level five years from now.
Final price depends on the specifics of your yard, your house, and what you want the deck to do. Joshua Knisely will walk the site, measure, and give you a written number before any work starts.
What Affects the Price
- Square footage and how many levels the deck steps through.
- Material grade (entry-level composite vs. capped premium boards vs. pressure-treated).
- Railing type and linear footage (aluminum, composite, or wood).
- Footing depth and soil conditions, especially on lake lots or sloped yards.
- Stairs, skirting, built-in benches, planters, or integrated low-voltage lighting.
- Permit fees and any DNR coordination required for lakefront work.
How the Build Process Works
- 1
Site Visit and Estimate
Joshua Knisely comes out, walks the yard, measures, and talks through what you want the deck to do. You get a written estimate with materials and labor broken out.
- 2
Permit Pull
We pull the permit with the Kosciusko County building department. If you're on a lake, we file the DNR LARE paperwork at the same time. This usually takes 1-3 weeks depending on the season.
- 3
Footings and Inspection
Footings go below the 36-inch frost line. On lake lots with saturated soil, we drive helical piers instead of pouring concrete. The county inspector signs off on footing depth before we frame.
- 4
Framing and Decking
We frame with pressure-treated lumber, then install your decking boards (composite or pressure-treated) with hidden fasteners where the product allows. Stairs and skirting go in alongside the deck surface.
- 5
Railing, Finish, and Final Inspection
Aluminum or composite railing installs to Indiana IRC code. We handle the final building department inspection and walk the deck with you before we leave the site.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most standard decks take 1-2 weeks of on-site work once we break ground. The full timeline from signed estimate to finished deck usually runs 4-8 weeks because of permit wait times and material lead times on composite boards. Lakefront builds with DNR permits can stretch that to 8-12 weeks.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Indiana?
Yes. Kosciusko County and most surrounding counties require a building permit for any deck attached to a house or over 30 inches off the ground. Lakefront decks also need a DNR LARE permit. We pull the permits as part of every job, so you don't deal with the building department yourself.
What's the difference between composite and pressure-treated decking?
Pressure-treated is southern yellow pine treated to resist rot. It costs less upfront ($25-40/sq ft installed) but needs sealing every 2-3 years and lasts 12-15 years. Composite (Trex, TimberTech) is a capped polymer board. Higher cost ($45-65/sq ft) but no maintenance and 25-50 year warranties.
Can you build a deck on a lakefront property in Indiana?
Yes. Lakefront decks on Wawasee, Tippecanoe, Webster, and other Kosciusko County lakes need DNR LARE permits and usually helical piers instead of poured footings because the soil is saturated. We handle the permitting and the specialized footing work. Budget an extra $8,000-15,000 over a comparable land-side deck.
Does a deck add value to a home?
A well-built deck typically returns 60-75% of its cost at resale and is one of the most-used outdoor features buyers look for in Northern Indiana, especially on lake properties. Composite decks tend to appraise higher than pressure-treated because buyers see the lower maintenance as a long-term value.
