Composite Decks Built to Last 25+ Years in Northern Indiana

Trex, TimberTech, and AZEK installations from a Warsaw crew that knows how this stuff holds up around our lakes and through our winters.

Why Composite?

Composite decking made sense the first time I rebuilt a 12-year-old pressure-treated deck on Lake Wawasee. The boards were cupped, the screws were lifting, and the homeowner was tired of sealing it every other summer. We swapped it for capped composite, and that deck still looks the same as the day we finished it.

Capped composite means the wood-and-plastic core is wrapped in a hard polymer shell on all four sides. That shell is what shrugs off stains, fading, and the freeze-thaw cycles we get from November through March. Uncapped composite costs less but absorbs moisture, so I rarely recommend it for anything near the water or under heavy tree cover.

Trex Transcend, TimberTech AZEK, and TimberTech PRO are the three product lines we install most. Trex carries a 25-year fade and stain warranty. AZEK is full PVC, lighter and cooler underfoot, and runs about 30-40% more than entry-level Trex. I'll walk you through the actual board samples in your yard before you pick anything.

Expect to pay roughly 1.8 to 2.5 times what a comparable pressure-treated deck would cost up front. You make that back in about 10 years because there's no sealing, no staining, no replacing rotted boards. For lakefront homes and anyone planning to stay put, composite is almost always the right call.

Benefits of Composite Decking

  • No annual sealing or staining, ever. Wash it twice a year with soap and water and you're done.
  • Fade and stain warranties of 25 to 50 years from Trex, TimberTech, and AZEK.
  • Holds up to Indiana freeze-thaw without splintering, cupping, or popping fasteners.
  • Hidden fastener systems leave a clean board surface with no exposed screw heads to rust.
  • Mold and mildew resistant capping handles shaded, lake-adjacent decks better than wood.
  • Color and grain stay consistent across the whole deck, which matters on larger builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is composite decking worth the extra cost over pressure-treated?

For most homeowners staying in their house more than 10 years, yes. Composite costs about double up front but eliminates sealing, staining, and board replacement. Over a 25-year span, composite usually comes out cheaper than pressure-treated when you add up materials, stain, and labor for upkeep.

What's the difference between capped and uncapped composite?

Capped composite has a hard polymer shell wrapped around the core, which blocks moisture, stains, and UV damage. Uncapped composite is just the wood-plastic core with no shell, so it absorbs water and fades faster. We install capped composite on every job because uncapped doesn't hold up well in Indiana's wet seasons.

Does composite decking get too hot to walk on barefoot?

Darker composite boards do run hotter than wood in direct sun, sometimes 15-20 degrees warmer. Lighter colors like driftwood or gravel path stay much cooler. AZEK PVC boards also run cooler than Trex because PVC reflects more heat. If your deck gets afternoon sun, we'll steer you toward a lighter shade.
