A lakefront deck is a different build than a backyard deck. The soil within thirty feet of the shoreline is usually saturated clay or sand that won't hold a standard sonotube footing without flooding the hole. The Indiana DNR has a separate review process for anything within ten feet of the ordinary high water mark. And the wood you'd happily use in Warsaw will gray out and split inside three seasons if it's catching spray off Center Lake or Pike Lake.

We pour, drive, and frame around those realities every week. On Winona, Wawasee, and Syracuse Lake, we default to helical pier footings because they auger past the soft layer and seat in firm soil without an open excavation that fills with groundwater. The pier loads are stamped, the depth is recorded, and the local building inspector gets a clean report.

Materials matter more on a lake lot. Capped composite decking handles moisture cycling that destroys ordinary pressure-treated boards, and powder-coated aluminum railing won't pit or corrode the way painted steel does. We carry sight lines low so you don't fight the view, and we frame the deck-to-dock transition so the boards meet the gangway flush instead of stepping down into a tripping hazard.

It's the only way to give you a number that holds up once the DNR letter comes back and the permit hits the desk at the county.
