Lakefront Work on Lake James

Lake James is Indiana's fourth-largest natural lake, and most of its 1,229 acres sit inside Pokagon State Park near Angola. That state park frontage puts a different set of eyes on shoreline work than any other lake we serve, on top of the moisture, winter ice, and soft soil that come standard with a natural lake.

James is really three connected basins, plus the smaller lakes in its own chain: Jimmerson, Snow, Big Otter, and Little Otter. Homeowners on the park side of the lake share a fence line with a state facility, so placement and materials matter to the DNR as much as they do to a neighbor.

Josh Knisely has built lakefront fencing and railing across northern Indiana since 2009, including plenty of jobs bordering Pokagon's public shoreline. On a lake like James that means anchoring for sandy, saturated ground at the water and picking a look that clears both a homeowner's expectations and the park's.

DNR Shoreline Rules on Lake James

We've filed this permit on more Lake James lots than any other lake we work, on both sides of the property line that borders Pokagon State Park. Indiana Code 14-26-2 applies statewide to public freshwater lakes, so anything within 10 feet of the ordinary high water mark, fence or railing included, needs an Indiana DNR LARE permit before it goes in, whether you're on park-adjacent ground or a private stretch of shoreline.

That review runs through the DNR Lake and River Enhancement program and takes longer during the busy summer season. Because part of the shoreline borders Pokagon itself, we loop in the park early and get the paperwork moving before anyone breaks ground.

Set back from the water, local county permit rules take over, and every post still has to clear Indiana's frost line to avoid heaving through the winter.

Building at the Edge of a State Park

Wood near the water looks fine for a few years, then the moisture wins. The end grain swells, the posts soften at the base, and the railing turns into a summer project. That failure happens faster on James than on a typical inland yard, since its three basins keep humidity high right at the shoreline.

For James we lean on aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl. Both handle the moisture and the extra foot traffic that comes with sharing a shoreline with a state park. Neither one rusts or needs repainting. A vinyl rail with an aluminum core also holds a straight line across a long dock run, since the metal channel carries the span instead of leaving it to the vinyl.

Soil at the water's edge shifts through the year with James' seasonal swings, so we set posts well past what a standard yard fence needs and anchor each one to the ground we actually find that day, whether that's the sandy stretch inside Pokagon or the firmer bank around Jimmerson. Skip that step and a rail starts leaning before the second winter is over.

Common Lake James Projects

Railing for Docks on All Three Basins

Code-compliant aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl railing sized for the different water levels and wave action across James' three basins, from the calmer park-side coves to the open main lake.

Fenced Water Access on Steuben County Lots

Bank fencing with a lockable gate down to the shoreline, laid out around the sightlines Pokagon frontage and Steuben County setbacks actually allow rather than a stock property-line plan.

Erosion-Prone Bank Runs Near Pokagon

Deeper post settings and site-specific anchoring for the soft, saturated ground along James' shoreline, most often needed on lots that share a fence line with Pokagon State Park.

Privacy Screens Between Chain-Lake Cottages

Vinyl privacy panels kept back from the water's edge for the tightly spaced cottage lots on Jimmerson, Snow, Big Otter, and Little Otter, where sightlines to the neighbor's dock sit close.

Lake James Fencing Questions

Do I need a permit for a fence on Lake James?
On most James shoreline jobs, yes. We've filed Indiana DNR LARE permits under Indiana Code 14-26-2 for lots bordering both Pokagon State Park and private shoreline, and the rule is the same either way: anything within 10 feet of the ordinary high water mark needs one.
What fencing lasts longest on Lake James?
Aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl, hands down. James' three basins keep humidity high right at the shoreline, and wood or bare steel hardware won't hold up nearly as long there as those two materials do.
How deep do posts go on a Lake James shoreline lot?
Well past what a fence post needs in a regular yard. Soil along James shifts with the seasons right at the shoreline, so we set below the frost line and anchor for whatever ground we hit that day, whether that's the main lake, Jimmerson, Snow, or one of the Otter lakes.
Can you add railing to an existing Lake James dock?
Yes, and on James that usually starts with a site visit, since dock conditions vary a lot across the three basins and the smaller lakes in the chain. Once we've seen what we're attaching to, we pick a compatible railing system, install it to safety standards, and most jobs wrap up in a single day.
