“We had Area Wide put in a 6-foot vinyl privacy fence along the back property line and both sides of our yard. The quote was accurate to the penny and the crew finished in two days. Our dogs finally can't get out (if you've met our younger one, you know that's no small thing). We've already recommended Josh to two neighbors.”

HOA Note
Newer subdivisions on the north side of Elkhart and out toward Dunlap and Bristol commonly have HOAs. Older neighborhoods on the south and west sides typically do not. Check your deed covenants before you commit to a railing color or material.
Deck Footings and Frost in Elkhart
Elkhart sits on heavy clay soil through most of the city. The west and south sides especially have dense, slow-draining clay that holds water around footings. That has two consequences: footings need to be belled at the base for resistance to frost heave, and drainage around the deck has to be planned, not assumed.
Frost depth in Elkhart County runs the standard Indiana 36 to 42 inches. Every footing we pour goes below 42 inches, and on heavy-clay lots we bell the bottom 12 inches wider than the post for added grip.
Elkhart's manufacturing base means many homes were built quickly in the post-war boom. Older rim joists are sometimes undersized for modern deck loads, so we inspect and reinforce the ledger attachment area before new framing goes up.

What Our Customers Say
Trusted by homeowners and contractors across Elkhart County and Northern Indiana.
“We have a cottage on Wawasee that needed new railing on the dock and a fresh deck off the back of the house. Josh came out, walked the whole property, and flagged a few things the previous owner had done that weren't up to code. He was upfront about what we needed and why. The aluminum railing on the dock has held up beautifully through two winters now.”
“We manage a storage yard off the bypass in Elkhart and needed about 400 feet of 8-foot chain-link with a drive gate on one end. Area Wide came out fast, gave us a competitive quote, and had the whole thing done in three days. The gate latches solidly, the posts are set properly, and it hasn't shifted at all. Straightforward to deal with from start to finish.”
“I wanted a classic white picket fence across the front of my property without the headache of maintaining wood. Josh helped me pick the right panel style for the look I was going for and the installation was clean and fast. Every post is perfectly plumb. You can tell this crew has done it a few thousand times. Very happy with how the yard looks now.”
“We were trying to define the property line along the shoreline of our Maxinkuckee lot without blocking the view or running into trouble with the lake association. Josh knew exactly what was and wasn't allowed and designed a low aluminum fence that works perfectly. The sandy soil right at the water's edge wasn't a problem. He used the right anchoring method and everything is solid.”
“We had Area Wide build a 14x18 composite deck off the back of our house. From the permit to the final walkthrough it was handled professionally. Josh flagged a grade issue in our yard that would have caused drainage problems under the deck if we hadn't addressed it. Something we never would have caught ourselves. The deck is solid, level, and looks exactly like we hoped. Worth every dollar.”
“We had 180 feet of old rotted wood fence along our alley that had been falling apart for years. Area Wide pulled the old posts, hauled everything off, and had new vinyl up in a day and a half. No mess left behind, and the new fence is exactly what we needed. The crew showed up when they said they would and got right to it. Couldn't ask for better.”
“Had them build a 12x16 pressure-treated deck with aluminum railing. Josh gave us a clear quote with no surprises. The crew worked through a rainy stretch and still finished on schedule. Railing is solid and looks sharp. No issues since install, and we use the deck constantly in the summer.”
“We needed railing on our dock platform on Lake Manitou. Josh knew the DNR permit requirements ahead of time and walked us through the process before we started anything. The aluminum railing has been up through a full Indiana winter and looks the same as it did on day one. Solid work and no guessing games along the way.”
“Got 6-foot chain-link across the back and one side of a rental property we manage. The price was fair and the work was good. Took about a week longer than the original estimate because of a materials delay, but Josh called ahead to let us know. Good communication and a clean result. Would use them again.”
“We had Area Wide run 800 feet of high-tensile perimeter fence around part of our Marshall County property. They handled the heavy clay and uneven terrain without any issues. Posts are set well, fence is tight, and everything held up through a wet spring. Good crew, good price, no complaints.”
“Needed about 600 feet of 8-foot chain-link with barbed wire around a storage yard we lease on the north side of Elkhart. Area Wide gave us a competitive quote and had it installed in four days. The work was exactly what we asked for, the gate operates smoothly, and the posts aren't going anywhere. Reliable contractor.”
Questions From Elkhart Customers
- How much does a deck cost in Elkhart?
- A 12x16 pressure-treated deck in Elkhart runs 8,500 to 12,500 dollars. Composite at the same size runs 18,500 to 26,000 depending on board line and railing. Heavy-clay lots that need belled footings can add 500 to 1,500 to the foundation cost.
- Do I need a permit for a deck in Elkhart?
- Yes. The Elkhart Building Department requires a permit for any attached deck or any deck higher than 30 inches above grade. Unincorporated properties go through Elkhart County in Goshen. We pull the permit and schedule the inspections as part of the project.
- How do you build a deck on Elkhart's clay soil?
- Heavy clay holds water and grips footings well, but it heaves with frost. We dig footings below 42 inches, bell the base wider than the post, and pour against undisturbed clay. We also slope grade away from the deck so the footing area is not sitting in standing water.
- What's the difference between composite and pressure-treated in Elkhart?
- Pressure-treated lumber costs less up front and needs sealing every 2 to 3 years to last 12 to 15. Composite costs more but is essentially maintenance-free for 25 to 30 years. Elkhart's wet winters and clay-soil drainage tend to favor composite for long-term value.
- How long does deck installation take in Elkhart?
- Build time on a standard 12x16 deck is about one to two weeks. Permit turnaround is typically 7 to 14 days for the City of Elkhart and 10 to 21 days for Elkhart County. Total project time from contract to final inspection runs 4 to 7 weeks.
- Can you replace an old deck without rebuilding from scratch?
- Sometimes. If the framing was built to code, sized correctly, and is not rotted, we can re-deck and re-rail over the existing structure. About half the older Elkhart decks we look at have undersized framing or a poorly flashed ledger, in which case full replacement is the right call.
